Where I go for sushi

People often ask me, where do you go out for sushi? Or, what’s the best sushi in San Diego County?

To be honest, I don’t go out much for sushi (because I eat sushi 2-3 times per week) unless I am traveling, or want to be inspired and get ideas from other talented chefs.

That being said, my number one favorite sushi restaurant in San Diego would have to be Wrench and Rodent in Oceanside. They are not traditional, (far from it), but the cuisine that is presented by Davin, Loren, Alex and the rest of their talented chefs is incredible to say the least.

If I am in South San Diego County I’ve heard Souchi is amazing and recently received a Michelin Star I believe, but I have yet to have the pleasure.

Kens Sushi Workshop in Carmel Valley is also top notch. Ken is a happy chef who has more exotic fish than say a Wrench and Rodent (who specialize in sustainability above all else).

Taka Sushi in Downtown San Diego has always been one of my go too’s as well, Chef Mauru is classically trained and super-talented.

If your with a group that doesn’t like sushi but you need that fix I HIGHLY recommend Market Restaurant + Bar in Del Mar. They have a lounge with a sushi bar and Sushi Chef Frank is an awesome. Their fish is stellar and the rest of your party can dine on my favorite cuisine in all of San Diego. Chef Carl and Johnny make perfect food. Perfect ingredients, preparation, sauces, presentations and portions. Market is my go to for any special occasion.

Other than that, I’m a Southern Californian burrito eating machine, haha.

Chef Giles
